Following his father's abdication, the late Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, Sheikh Ali bin Abdullah assumed the throne in the year 1949. This letter was written and sent by Sheikh Ali to the British Resident at the time, informing him that he has accepted being appointed as ruler of Qatar. The letter is dated August 20, 1949 (25 Shawwal 1368 AH).
