This musical instrument, made of wood and skin in a cylindrical shape, belongs to the Rahmani class of drums, known for being double headed with a skin at each end. The body has ropes crisscrossing it, which assumedly can help gauge the taughtness of the skins. The object is a two ended barrel drum. There is a double thickness woven cotton strap attached to the drum by one copper alloy ring and one iron ring for which the strap is threaded. The cotton strap is stitched through the centre to join the two section. Two iron eyes are attached to the drum through a copper strap of metal. The iron ring attachment area has a decorative copper floral design element covering a hole in the drum. There are also iron eyes attached through 2 of 4 square holes along a copper strap. The copper strap is attached to the drum sections and to each end of a length of rope which extends 208 cm beyond this and is probably used for carrying the drum.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT QATAR
The Qatar Peninsula is surrounded by sea except in the south where it connects with its neighbours from the Arabian Peninsula. For hundreds of years people have shared the land, resources and knowledge inherited from their environment. With no fixed lifestyle in terms of time and place, people moved easily and freely between land and sea for trade, livestock, pearl diving, fishing, and hunting at various times throughout the year. This symbiotic relationship between the people and their environment was represented in the unity of their societies, including the exchange of knowledge, stories and the trading of available goods.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT - REGION/GULF/WORLD
