The Eastern skink is characterized by its sleek body, glossy skin, well-developed limbs, pointed snout, and small ears. It showcases a golden pinkish hue with black-bordered scales. It also features golden bars on its back and additional dark bars along its sides.
Habitat and Biology
The Eastern Skink inhabits arid regions, especially sandy dune habitats, where it adeptly burrows into loose sand. Its physical adaptations allow it to navigate beneath the sand's surface, akin to swimming. Despite its preference for subterranean travel, it emerges to the surface when threatened. Despite its small ears, it possesses keen hearing, facilitating easy prey detection. Its diet centers around beetles, though it also consumes insect larvae and plants. Breeding occurs during the rainy season, yielding a single mature lizard annually. Notably, this is the sole lizard in Qatar that doesn't lay eggs.
ECO System Qatar
Sand dune ecosystem: The crescent-shaped sand dunes are considered one of the prominent features of the terrestrial environment of the State of Qatar. In southern Qatar, huge sand dunes rise from the desert plain. These dunes are shaped by the wind and are constantly shifting. In certain conditions, the movement of sand grains creates a low humming sound. The dunes near Mesai’eed are one of the few places on Earth where this phenomenon of ‘singing’ sand dunes can be heard. The plants and animals that survive in the intense heat and unstable sands of the dunes are supremely well adapted to the challenging conditions.
