The egretta species displays varying color phases—dark grey, white, and occasional intermediate forms. It has a pale-brown to yellowish bill with a slight curve at the base, while its legs are dark olive-brown, transitioning to a grayish or greenish shade on the lower legs. Feet are commonly green or yellow. The white morph boasts entirely white plumage, with the juvenile white morph occasionally having gray feathers. On the other hand, the dark morph appears as a dull grey with white chin and throat, sometimes having a few white flight feathers. Juvenile dark morphs tend to have lighter shades on the front neck, breast, and belly, along with a few white flight feathers.
Habitat and Biology
The western-reef heron is commonly found along coastal areas, particularly in tidal flats, mangroves, saltmarshes, and lagoons in Qatar. Its diet primarily comprises fish, crustaceans, and molluscs, and it is also known to consume crickets. Breeding for this species typically occurs in solitary pairs or colonies, taking place on the ground, reed beds, bushes, and small mangrove trees.
ECO System Qatar
Mangroves are saltwater-adapted trees and shrubs growing in coastal areas' intertidal zones. Their intricate root systems offer natural fish habitats, serve as marine species nurseries, and protect coastlines from erosion by waves and storms. Qatar hosts the Avicennia Marina species, commonly called grey or white mangroves, mainly on the east coast. The most significant mangrove forests are at Al Thakira and Al Khor, boasting the oldest and largest mangroves. Despite ongoing reforestation efforts by the government, development led to the uprooting of the mangrove lake in Al Wakra.
