Spalerosophis diadema, characterized by its distinct head and body coloration, exhibits variability among individuals and subspecies. The coloration typically ranges from greyish to yellowish, beige, or reddish. A series of dark brown or reddish blotches runs down the spine, merging into a dark stripe at the neck. Along the flanks, there's a row of smaller spots on both sides. The species possesses unique head markings, including a dark band across the head between the eyes, sometimes accompanied by several dark spots. The elongated head has a round snout, large eyes with circular pupils.
Habitat and Biology
The Spalerosophis diadema inhabits arid and semi-arid regions, including stony and sandy deserts, often found in cultivated zones and palm groves surrounding oases. Its activity patterns shift with the seasons. It is active during the day in autumn, winter, and spring, transitioning to being nocturnal and crepuscular in the summer. During daytime, it seeks refuge among stones, loose rocks, desert plant roots, or rodent burrows to avoid extreme heat. As an active predator, it mainly preys on rodents. It immobilizes its prey by coiling its body around it before delivering a suffocating bite. The species possesses oral gland secretions with toxicity to small mammals but not to humans. Additionally, it's known to consume lizards and small birds.
