Spear grass is an annual green grass that forms dense tufts. It has reclining stems, narrow glaucous leaves with a pointed tip, and a compact linear cluster of sharp florets as its inflorescence. The seeds are brown and shaped like a spindle.
Habitat and Biology
The plant grows in compact, shallow, sandy soil as well as rocky areas in shallow sandy channels. In Qatar, it emerges following winter rains and frequently prevails in desert landscapes. Seeds tend to germinate better after being stored in dry soil and subjected to high summer temperatures prior to the onset of rain. The plant flowers in April, relying on wind pollination. Seed dispersal could occur by attaching seeds to the fur of passing mammals.
ECO System Qatar
Rocky desert ecosystem:The Qatar peninsula's interior consists of flat, rocky plains with hardy life forms surviving and offering hunting spaces for predators. Stony deserts with sand, pebbles, and limestone emerge at the center, featuring gravel plains and eroded limestone formations. Three stony desert types are noted: Hamada, tough exposed zones prone to surface fracturing due to extreme summer heat; Hofuf, plains with a light gravel layer; and Wadis, dry channels filling after heavy rains.
