The Slevin’s sand gecko is a small gecko characterized by a sizable head, a tapering tail, and slender rounded toes. The species possesses large eyes with a vertically contracting pupil, which serves to protect the retina. Its body is relatively dark sandy in color, and lighter on the undersides with bands ranging from orange to brown.
Habitat and Biology
the Slevin's Sand Gecko is a species that is typically found in areas with firm sand and sandy plains, and it can also inhabit semi-desert environments. When faced with a potential predator, the juvenile gecko employs a distraction display by creating wave-like movements with its extended tail. This behavior diverts the predator's attention away from its vulnerable head and body. The gecko is nocturnal and feeds on insects and small invertebrates. Female geckos of this species lay single eggs as part of their reproductive process.
ECO System Qatar
Rocky desert ecosystem:The Qatar peninsula's interior consists of flat, rocky plains with hardy life forms surviving and offering hunting spaces for predators. Stony deserts with sand, pebbles, and limestone emerge at the center, featuring gravel plains and eroded limestone formations. Three stony desert types are noted: Hamada, tough exposed zones prone to surface fracturing due to extreme summer heat; Hofuf, plains with a light gravel layer; and Wadis, dry channels filling after heavy rains.
