Aurelia aurita is a large, translucent jellyfish with a bell-shaped body adorned with delicate tentacles. Notably, it features distinctive horseshoe-shaped gonads found at the base of its stomach, serving as a recognizable feature for distinguishing between males and females.
Habitat and Biology
Aurelia aurita is a commonly found jellyfish in coastal areas. It forms dense groups near the water surface during jellyfish blooms and moves slowly with pulsating motions, drifting along currents. Stranded and deceased medusae can accumulate on beaches. These jellyfish primarily feed on plankton, encompassing small organisms and larvae, using specialized cells called nematocysts for both capturing prey and defense against predators. It inhabits oceans worldwide, including regions like the Arabian Gulf and Qatar's coastal waters. It thrives in temperate waters below 19°C but can tolerate temperatures up to 31°C. It can also survive in brackish water with salinities not lower than six percent.

Coral reefs are colonies of tiny animals thriving in nutrient-poor marine waters, typically in shallow, productive regions on solid substrates. Composed of calcium carbonate secretions, they serve essential ecological, economic, recreational, and cultural roles. They offer shelter and sustenance to various marine life, protect coastlines from storms and erosion, support fishing and leisure activities, and are part of cultural heritage. Around 10% of Qatar's seabed is covered by coral reefs, vital to over 80% of the Gulf's fish species. Noteworthy Qatar reefs are near Halul Island, Othman Reef, and Khor Al Udaid. Unfortunately, these reefs are endangered, as evidenced by a significant decline in coral health.
