A replica of the fish’s armor plate offers an idea of its shape. Qataraspis was an armor-plated fish measuring between 50 cm and 100 cm in length. Its tail moved side to side for propulsion, while its fins provided steering control. It likely foraged along the seafloor, using the bony plates of its jaws—functioning as primitive teeth—to bite into food. The dermal plates covering its body offered protection from predators. To create this scientifically accurate replica, international specialists collaborated to reconstruct Qataraspis from this tiny fragment. The reconstruction draws inspiration from similar, more complete species, though some elements, such as the shape and size of the fins, required careful scientific estimation. Other significant marine species from this period include brachiopods, graptolites, and macroalgae. The fossil found at Dukhan, measuring only 6 cm across, originates from an armor plate at the base of the pectoral spine. This specimen is a holotype, meaning it was the single reference used to define an entirely new genus and species.
