The Khatiyah meteorite is a significant discovery as it is the first meteorite found in Qatar to be officially recognized by the International Society for Meteoritics and Planetary Science. The meteorite was discovered in 2000 by a Qatar Petroleum employee while jogging in Dukhan, western Qatar. The piece is believed to be a fragment of a larger mass that broke upon entry into Earth's atmosphere.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT QATAR
Ten meteorites have been discovered in Qatar to date, while it is estimated that an average of two large meteorites land in Qatar each year. All meteorites found in Qatar have originated from the asteroid belt, which is a collection of small rocky bodies located about 300-400 million kilometers away from Earth.
